Art

Rationale

At Flanshaw School our intention is to provide an Art curriculum which allows children to explore their imagination, generate ideas, acquire skills, apply judgements and celebrate their learning. We want children to develop as critical and creative thinkers and consolidate their learning in a variety of contexts. Through progressive and inspiring planning, we intend to encourage the children to express, explore and celebrate their own ideas as well as those of their peers. We aim to foster originality and creativity using Art.

Intent

Art at Flanshaw School, is seen as a fundamental part of school life. We are committed to providing a rich Art Curriculum for our children. Art enables children to express themselves, to be creative and to learn about their own and other cultures and communities. We see Art as a means to support learning in a range of ways; skills developed in Art can be transferred across the curriculum to aid learning in school and beyond. We aim to provide a high-quality Art Curriculum which will inspire and challenge our pupils.

Implementation

The teaching and implementation of the Art Curriculum at Flanshaw School is based on the National Curriculum and linked to topics to ensure a well-structured approach to this creative subject. At Flanshaw we follow the Kapow Art scheme which follows the national curriculum for Art, however this is adapted to suit the needs of our children and build knowledge of local artists.

Our children will be taught Art in a way that ensures progression of skills, and follows a sequence to build on previous learning and experience. Our children will gain experience and skills of a wide range of formal elements of art in a way that will enhance their learning opportunities, enabling them to use art across a range of subjects to be creative and solve problems, ensuring they make progress. Art will be alternate every half term throughout the academic year to ensure full coverage of the National Curriculum. Children will visit the local Hepworth Gallery during their time at Flanshaw and we promote opportunities to paint and draw outside of school.

Impact

Children’s work and pictures of their work will be stored in their individual sketchbooks, or on display for reference when not possible in a sketchbook. At Flanshaw we value the importance of sketchbooks and that these are a showcase of the children’s creative talents. Progress will be shown through outcomes. The Art curriculum will contribute to children’s personal development in creativity, independence, judgement and self-reflection. This will be seen in them being able to talk confidently about their work, and sharing their work with others. After each unit of work children will be encouraged and given time to reflect upon their work and in Key Stage 2 use this reflection to improve or edit their work. Children who are assessed and need further teaching on an area highlighted through the assessment will be given this opportunity to ensure that knowledge is embedded.
