ECO Week

This week was Eco Week in school, where different year groups looked at sustainability and looking after our planet. The Year 3/4 focus was on the use of electricity.

We had a research task to find out how much electricity our appliances both in school and at home use; how much it would cost to run for an hour and how we can start to save electricity. One day during the week, each class had an exercise bike to pedal. This was to see how much effort we had to give to produce some electricity. 1hr could produce roughly 100 watts of power. In context, 5 hours (1 school day) of pedalling could power:

  • A TV for 3 hours
  • A computer for 1 hour
  • 1 1/2 hour of playtime on my PS4 with the TV on too

However it isn't even enough to power:

  • A washing machine
  • Dishwasher
  • or Toaster

It was very tiring work and the children are glad they don't have to do this everyday jus to power their things.
