Hiccup the sick Viking
Children in Year 3/4 have used the beautifully written story Hiccup the Sick Viking by Cressida Cowell to rewrite their own improved versions.. Over 5 weeks the children have studied the story, devised plans to edit and improve the sentence level of the book, research and incorporate the Topic of Vikings and enhance their wow vocabulary.
Below is a sample of some of the children's completed stories.
At the very bottom of the page is a Glossary of some of the words used and taught.

The children were tasked to broaden and use a variety of new vocabulary.
Year 3/4 Objective: To make more ambitious word choices (often reflecting those modelled by a teacher).
Parts of a Viking Longboat: Using the descriptions the children had to label the parts of the longboat to use in their writing. The sample activity below includes the answers for reference to the words used in their writing above.
Other words used may include:
Breaching | Jumps/leaves the water |
Dappled | Mixed colours |
Glistening | Sparkling in the light |
Itinerant | Freely moving in any direction |
Kaleidoscopic | A range of colours |
Mottled | Mixed colours |
Scintillating | Sparkling in the light |
Spectrum | A range of colours |
Squamous | Scaly |
Thunniforming | Swimming powered by a tail |
Undulating | Weaving in and out |
Lastly children had access to a thesaurus in their editing and redrafting stage. Once most of the hard work writing the text was complete they used some quality time trying to choose some words to up-level.
