Melting & Burning

During our topic on "properties" the children had to look at the effects of heating different items. Some were reversible - like melting candle wax and letting it cool to harden, whilst others were irreversible - like heating raw egg and cooking it. (It was also smelly).

I wonder why this lesson caused such excitement and fascination with the children? In this lesson the children had to set fire to and burn a range of materials to test, how long the item burnt for and also what byproduct was  produced at the end. (e.g. Ash)

We initially tried to perform this experiment outside but the weather and wind kept blowing out our flames, so we had to move back into the class and pray the fire alarms didn't set off. Thankfully the lesson went smoothly but there was a lingering smell for a few days...

Interesting fact - Walkers monster munch burn for a long time!
