HT4 - Changing Materials

In HT4 we have looked at changing materials, here is an overview of what we did:

- The children were given salt, sugar, cocoa, bicarbonate of soda, cornflour and yeast. They then mixed these with water and observed any changes. They found some materials dissolved whereas other reacted to the water and turned the mixture cloudy etc. We discussed how the temperature of the water could be changed and predicted what would happen then.

- We then discussed if the changes were reversible through filtering, sieving and evaporating. The children experimented with which if any would work for each material. They made informed choices to use a sieve for marbles for instance but filtering for sand and they found that if the material was soluble (sugar) it would need to go through an evaporation process.

- The children also experimented with melting, we made some yummy cornflake buns in class. The children recorded the different stages that the chocolate went through and wrote a set of instructions of how to make Easter buns and the most enjoyable part of course was eating them!
